Port Projects

PORT PROJECTS OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF BUENAVENTURA

The main Colombian port does not want to stay behind and looks for ways to be more competitive. The Buenaventura bay could become one of the most important Latin American port nodes, if the expansion plans launched are concluded in order to respond to the challenges from economic globalization.

Four projects to develop new port terminals, coupled with the expansion strategy of the current Port Society, set up the works with which it aims to handle over the next 20 years more than 40 million tons of cargo.

Container Terminal

The Container Terminal of Buenaventura, Tcbuen, to be held at the estuary of "Aguacate" shows up as one of the first projects to become real. It will be the alternative Multipurpose Private Maritime Terminal of international public service, in Buenaventura bay, created and designed to respond nimbly to customer needs from the second half of 2009.

Due to the excellent and personalized service and its competitive costs, it will be the medium format terminal preferred by Colombian importers and exporters in the first decade of the twenty-first century. It will be a major actor of utility to the port city of Buenaventura, to create jobs, and protect the environment, and also channel of regular contact between national and international entities which has access and the community, Port-City, which surrounds it.

Three banks - the BCI of Central America along with the Andean Development Corporation; Wespld in Germany and BNP Paribas of France-, approved credit shares of US$150 million.

Moreover this new Port Society received the support of the Container Terminal in Barcelona, Spain, TCB, which acquired 30% of the share capital through an investment of US$25 million.

As its name indicates, the specialty of the Tcbuen project will be the handling of containers. Its first step is the construction of a quay 450 meters long with capacity for a boat, plus spaces where there will be accommodation for the mobilization of more than 200 thousand containers annually. The goal is to drive in less than ten years one million containers per year, in phase four of the project".

It is estimated that the first works will take two years, during which more than two thousand direct jobs will be generated.

The extension of the existing terminal

The Port society of Buenaventura, managed the expansion of its current concession contract for 20 more years, which sets the bases for its expansion plan. "The goal is to achieve from the year 2014(when the expansion of the concession begins) an investment plan that allows the company to switch from handling 10 million tons of cargo today to 18 million by the year 2033".

This requires investments in excess of $ 450,000 million. The growth of the current terminal is inserted into the Master Plan for Investment in Infrastructure, supported by the National Government and costs US$275 million, plus another US$175 million in equipment.

THE TMD for its acronym in Spanish (Terminal Marítimo Delta del Río Dagua).

Another project that could focus in a future is the Delta Maritime Terminal of Dagua river, TMD. "It will be a multipurpose port for handling of cargo in containers, general cargo and bulk cargo solid". The port would have a length of 1.600 meters long by 700 meters wide and has a scheduled cargo handling over 18 million tons annually. The TMD started its environmental process in 1999 and is also in the process of seeking funding. The investment would reach US$279 million.
