To adjust the infrastructure of the maritime terminal of Colombia to the changing needs of international trade, through the issuance of the law 1 January 10, 1991, the Government motivated the conformation of private companies to manage and operate the port facilities in the country before handled by the public company "Puertos de Colombia".
For that the Sociedad Portuaria de Buenaventura S.A. was founded, which was presented by the Presidente de la República de Colombia, César Gaviria Trujillo, on March 17, 1994, the concession for the administration of Buenaventura Maritime Terminal for 20 years, the period between 1994 and 2014.
The Sociedad Portuaria de Buenaventura S.A., is a mixed economy company, governed by private law. 83% of its shareholdings belong to private entrepreneurs made up of importers, exporters, port operators, shipping lines, labor unions, individuals and former workers of the port. The remaining 15% is in the public sector comprising the Buenaventura´s City Hall, and 2% for the Ministerio de Transporte.
Today, it is a competitive Terminal with the best infrastructure for a multi-port, has a Port Modernization Plan which seeks to convert the port of Buenaventura on one of the most competitive Maritime Terminals in Latin America.
For the benefit of the Colombian foreign trade, the investment done looks for more efficient port operations through the specialization of the berths in:
three docks for containers.
Three docks for Bulk Solids.
A dock for Sugar.
A dock for liquid.
Three Multipurpose docks.
